Interview with Michael Popwell

March 16, 2024 - Before opening his own agency in 2020, Michael Popwell honed his skills for six years under the mentorship of an experienced agent. One pivotal lesson he absorbed was the critical role of digital marketing in the modern business landscape.

As he prepared to launch his insurance office in Suwannee, GA, Michael recognized that a well-crafted marketing strategy was essential for standing out in the competitive environment of the Atlanta metro area.

Melon Local: What was your initial approach to digital marketing like?

Michael Popwell: I had the great opportunity to work for a successful agent. He said you have to do digital marketing — that’s the space we play in. For the last two years in his office, I helped him manage some marketing stuff, and I saw how important it truly was. When I opened my doors, I understood that I needed to play in that space too, and had to create a standalone marketing budget. That’s how everybody shops for insurance these days, and that’s why I’m glad I found y’all.

ML: Why did you go with Melon Local?

Michael: Melon Local is great to deal with and is transparent. I could see what a nightmare it was dealing with the marketing company the agent I was working for was using at his office. They weren’t even one of the companies I contacted when I opened my doors. When I initially signed up for y’all I didn’t have that same conversation that I had with other companies. I even convinced my mentor to get on board with Melon!

ML: What’s kept you with us so far?

Michael: As long as you all are doing your jobs — which you all do great at — Melon Local is always going to generate more opportunities and leads for my team. That’s what I’m buying. One other thing I added a couple of years ago that has been huge for me is Melon Local’s social media package because I’m not a social media person. You’ve all been doing an excellent job at managing my Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. If I can kind of set it and forget it and have some help with social media, that’s great for me.

ML: How do you enjoy having your own personal Client Success Manager?

Michael: Our monthly calls help, especially when I’m spending as much money as I am in this space. I want to make sure I’m getting the best ROI I can. She’s always a text, call or email away. I don’t mind paying more for that kind of service. It’s not even crossed my mind to shop for other companies because my success manager does such a great job managing my marketing. I also like that we can share feedback back and forth based on the numbers and figure out where to reallocate advertising dollars.

ML: Lastly, do you have any advice for new agents?

Michael: Listen to the people who’ve done it before you, and try to make friends with everybody. Get some good mentors, and keep those people in your close circle. Build those relationships and never burn a bridge. And make good relationships — like I did with Melon Local. This is definitely one of those good relationships I’ve made!
